It’s been a while since my last post and amid all this crazy lock-down/quarantine stuff, I’ve just been trying to find the best way to stay safe and sane. To find the silver-lining in an otherwise very stressful situation.
It’s given me the freedom to be creative, time to take care of myself, to learn new recipes, to discover new music, to spend more time with my family..What I’ve been telling myself lately is this:
As bad as things get, I know it’s only a matter of time until things get better. Nothing is permanent!
For today’s post I wanted to share some shows I’ve been binging to keep myself sane during all of this craziness –
. . .
6 Shows I’m Currently Binging
In a time of such uncertainty, sometimes you just need a good laugh. Thankfully, Shameless has nine seasons worth and it’s all on Netflix! Shameless follows the Gallaghers, a family living in south side Chicago who’re always on the prowl for their next money-making scheme in light of their absent, party-loving father. Neighbors V and Kev are by far my favorites and the friendship between Fiona (the oldest Gallagher,) and V never fail to make me smile. Shameless has it’s fair share of tear-jerking moments – as any family drama do – but it’ll only make you want to root for them more!
SKAM France (+Belgium / Italia)
SKAM originally started out as a Finish show about a group of friends in high school (with each season focusing on one character in particular) but the show quickly gained popularity and spawned a bunch of remakes all over Europe. Stumbling upon SKAM France was a total – but happy – accident. But when Lucas and Eliott popped up on my ‘recommended’, it changed me forever! HIGHLY RECOMMEND SEASON 3. I guarantee You’ll be asking ‘where you have you been all my life?’. Lucas and Eliott’s storyline (S3) give me life and Manon (S2) is a girl after my own heart!
*Side note: I also just finished SKAM Belgium and Italia…both are pretty great in their own right (SOBBE FOREVERR) but France has definitely stolen my heart.
I’ve been meaning to watch this for what feels like forever and now that I’m working on a fantasy, witch-filled manuscript, it kind of seemed like the right time. The Magicians follows a group of young magicians who attend Brakebills – an ivy-league magical college. Like Shameless, The Magicians is unapologetic with their humor and turns several fantasy tropes on their head which always kept me on my toes. The shows refreshing take on magic and the witty banter between cocktail-slinging duo Eliot and Margo are just a couple of the things I love most about The Magicians.
A Discovery of Witches
A Discovery of Witches chronicles the budding relationship of Diana (a young witch becoming attuned with her newfound powers) and Matthew (an ancient vampire with a passion for genetics) on the cusp of a mysterious dry spell in all supernatural abilities – vampires can’t turn humans and witches are seeing their magic waning.. I started watching this after one of my writing friends praised the book series and I have to say…I binged this hard. Which is why I was totally crushed when I realized it was only eight episodes so far. The effects are great and – as usual – Teresa Palmer (who plays Diana) is a total badass! Time to read the books I guess!
Chilling Adventures of Sabrina
Honestly…CHAOS is my biggest guilty pleasure! It’s such a different take on the comedy I grew up on with and is the perfect balance between horror, fantasy and good old teenage romance. Chilling Adventures of Sabrina follows Sabrina Spellman, a teenage witch in the small town of Greendale who’s trying to get a handle on her unholy powers, while keeping up with her human friends and slaying the ghastly creatures that threaten Greendale’s sleepy existence. I’ve always been a HUGE fan of Sabrina and this show brings me so much nostalgia while always being it’s own force.
Animal Kingdom starts off with J, a boy who moves in with his estranged family after his mother passes away. The Codys are a family of brothers who work with their cut-throat mother to pull off ballsy gigs and elaborate thievery. What I love most about Animal Kingdom is how each of the Cody brothers have their own story line – I’m not going to lie, I only started watching this show because I’m a huge Scott Speedman fan but nobody gets left behind in this show. Each character has their own arc and reasons for ‘carrying on the family business’ – which most shows try to do but usually get overwhelmed with.
. . .
And that concludes what the shows I’ve been binging lately! How have you been spending your quarantine? I really urge you to find the positives and keep your hope – which I know, is easier said than done. I find myself multiple times a day freezing up and freaking out about everything but it doesn’t do me or my mental health any good to dwell. Patience and common sense are key!
Stay safe and stay healthy Wanderers! <3
