Currently snowed in with some black tea, music and lots blankets. I’ve been writing, brainstorming and, just in general, thinking a lot lately. Since I mostly write sci/fi fantasy, the idea of super powers and mysterious abilities is obviously on my mind a lot and it got me thinking…how many times have I thought ‘WOW that super power sounds awesome!’ and then hastily changed my mind after giving it some thought.
So I thought it’d be fun for today’s post to write up a list of all the super powers I thought sounded great at one point but am kinda rethinking – here we go!
. . .
Powers I Love But Wouldn’t Want
I’m not going to lie, Misfits ruined this one for me xD At some point in my life, mind reading sounded awesome. The ability to never be lied to again? Cool. The ability to know exactly when someone close to you is about to use said lie? Not so cool.
In THEORY it sounds super useful. Watch 10 minutes of Vampire Diaries and prove me wrong! But honestly…what’s even real anymore if you’ve created this entire ‘perfect’ life using your power?
Thwart the bullies? Check. Become legendary weight lifter of the century? Check. Bring all the groceries inside with one trip? Big check. But Jessica Jones’ version of the story wasn’t nearly as cheery and I gotta say…I kinda got it after she had to remodel her apartment for the fiftieth time.
Seeing the Future
Am I the only one who thinks this sounds hella tempting as a young person? But the older I get, the more knowing the future sounds as terrifying as it does useful xD I can’t help thinking how differently I’d act if I knew how everything was going to play out! Besides…literally every future-seeing character I’ve ever read about does not make it sound like a party 😂 I can hardly stand the present news.
Do you know how many times a day I’d use this!? Spill coffee on my jeans running for the city bus? No problem. Too nervous during that job interview? Redo! Awkward silence? Rewind and retry. But I think I learnt my lesson along with Max and Chloe in life is strange. Screwing with the past is screwing with the present – and probably the future too xD He said it well in the movie About Time:
I had a crazy overactive imagination as a kid (which is great being a writer – but not so great when you’re terrified of the dark and things that go bump in the night). Somehow I used to think having a sixth sense and know what was on the ‘other side’ sounded really cool but after reading Kelly Armstrong’s ‘The Summoning’…I’ll pass 😱 Ghosts are invisible for a reason…right?
. . .
And that brings me to the end of my list! Agree with any of them? Disagree? Let me know in the comments what abilities you’d die for and which sound not so great!
Have a great weekend everyone, promise to write again soon xx
