I’m here today doing another writing tag created by the awesome lifeandotherdisasters! It’s been really great to connect with other writers on the blogisphere and I think Kat’s tags really bring us together 🙂
This tag is all about important choices your character makes throughout their story or choices they might have made if things were different.
So – Let’s get into it!
. . .
- Thank the person who tagged you but also link back to the original post! (I want to see all your lovely answers, people!)
- Provide a short description of your WIP/story!
“18 year old Ava Hale has spent her entire life in Haven, a run-down city ruled by constraint and trying to stay afloat in an unstable world. One night, Ava joins her rowdy and reckless best friend at a post-curfew party outside the safe zone. What starts out as a care-free night quickly turns into a fight for her life when The Guard crashes their party and Ava is arrested.
Taken out to the Wilds and imprisoned in The Compound, a facility that runs brutal experiments on convicts, Ava eyes are opened to a disturbing side of the place she once lived.
When the chance to escape comes though, Ava quickly realizes that her quest to reveal an earth-shattering conspiracy won’t be an easy one. Enemies prove to be not all they seem while those Ava thought she could trust, are entangled in heartbreaking truths.”
- This is pretty focused on main characters but don’t hesitate to use several characters for the answers if you want to! (We want to get to know as many of your characters as possible)
QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS
Where does your main character (MC) live? Were they born there or did they move to that place?
Ava was born in a city called Haevn. Small and walled off, Haevn is rebuilding itself from post-war and environmental disasters. Ava wants to explore more of the world around her, but without the proper passport, she can’t legally leave ‘for her own safety’ and so when we first meet her, she’s kind of trapped there.
Does your MC have a dream career? What (if anything) stops them from pursuing it?
When we first meet Ava, she wants to be a member of The Guard – this elite group that protects Haevn and the land around it – but it’s expected of her that she’ll be taking over her mothers medical practice instead. She loves to be active and The Gaurd would have been perfect for her but she failed the test because they told her her asthma made her a liability.
Did any of your characters ever go against their parents/family’s wishes? How did that change their relationship?
The above answer kinda explains why Ava and her mother have a strained relationship! Just the fact she’d take The Guards test at all when her mother put in a lot of time to train Ava medically stuffed a huge wedge in between the two of them. Getting herself thrown into the Wilds was the absolute last thing Ava’s mom wanted for her.
If faced with their greatest fear – would your MC try to overcome it or run the other way?
Ava can sometimes get stuck in her head when she’s scared – but that doesn’t stop her from moving forward anyway. Every time I picture Ava getting herself into another less than ideal situation – it goes a lot like this Nathan Drake gif from Uncharted xD
Did any character have to cut a person out of their life? Why?
Linc, who’s the lead male character, struggles to cut his brother Dom out of the picture. Dom has hurt/killed a lot of people while overseeing the Biosteel Project and Linc blames himself for just standing by.
What is your main character’s biggest regret?
Linc and Ava both have their own regrets they have to deal with – Ava’s is a bit of a spoiler since it happens towards the end but for the most part, she spends the entire book trying to reunite with her mother, terrified she’s messed up their relationship forever. Linc’s biggest regret is being a bystander for years prior to meeting Ava – until she inspires him to fight back.
Which character is most likely going to help a stranger, even if they got nothing out of it in return?
Noah for sure! There are a few points in the book where he goes commando to help those in need no matter how dangerous it may be. He’s very intuitive and always seems to know what you’re thinking before you do!
If your character got good/bad news, who would be the person they first tell?
Again…it’d have to be Noah xD Before Ava and Linc get together, their friendship gets a prickly start. When they first start having feelings for each other, they both turn to Noah for advice. Noah has known Linc for years and he and Ava get along almost immediately so he becomes the perfect confidant.
BONUS: Make an aesthetic for your MCs life if there had been no obstacles (money, geographical, etc.) and they had everything they wanted. (It is up to you if you want to explain it or not!)

If you’re a fellow writer and think this tag was cool then give it a go for yourself! It’s so cool to check out everyone’s different projects and these tags are such a cool way to display them – thanks Kat for continuing to keep us on our toes! :p
Well – that’s it for me tonight, have an awesome rest of your weekend everyone! <3
