Two tags in a row? Yes, I know, but what can I say? All of these really awesome writing tags are catching my eye. I pretend that they’re going to help me get through my quick draft somehow…buut I think I’m kidding myself and this is just hardcore procrastination xD But hey – at least they’re entertaining. Today, I wanted to do The Rising Author Tag!
Aris over at awkwardaris tagged anyone who wants to participate and I am so there for it! I also really loved Katie’s version over at The Act Diary so I mixed up the questions and took some from both of their posts! I might not be a published author *yet* but I’ve been working on a quick draft for quite some time now and hope to have it done by the summer so that I can get into editing and beta readers and all that other fun (terrifying) stuff!
Without further ado – let’s get into the questions!
. . .
Rising Author Tag!
1. What’s your favorite thing to write about?
I love post-apocalyptic / Sci-fi! Maybe we’re a twisted breed, imaging horrible apocalypses inflicted on the world and all that jazz. But I think I love seeing movies/reading books of that genre because it’s just so amazing to see humanity fight to keep their morals/humanity and survive against all odds. It sends the message that we’re a species that doesn’t give up easy. It’s those types of stories that have always inspired me so naturally it was the first genre I fell in love with. I also like paranormal-romance and YA.
2. How do you choose names for your characters?
I wrote a whole post about how I go about choosing names for my characters whiich you can find here, but usually I try to make it relevant to one of the following: upbringing/personality/role. In my sci/fi, I have a more minor character named Nova (though he would consider himself anything but minor). He’s one of four leaders outside the Capital and thinks pretty highly of himself so I wanted his name to sound just as ‘big’ and shiny as his attitude.
3. Can you do other things while writing? (e.g. eating, listening to music, etc.)
Eating would just make me way too distracted but I do tend to drink coffee when I’m writing and also I HAVE to have music playing in the background. I hate writing in total silence and music has always helped me get in the mood for a specific scene.
4. If your book was made into a movie, who would play the main character?
I get way into these types of things but I’m a really visual person so I like to choose actors for my characters and always use a photo of them on my character profiles! For my sci-fi, this is my main cast! Ava Hale (Jodelle Ferland) , Linc Finlay (Scott Speedman) , Sav Brody (Jenna Coleman) & Noah Wildes (Kristopher Turner).
5. Do you outline, or make the story up as you go?
There is a reason my old writing sits in a dusty binder under my desk xD Anything before grade 9 is just….yeah. When I was younger, I wasn’t using notebooks and just writing things as I went. Now, though I like to write each characters arc on their profile and for my quick draft, I have a google doc where I wrote 1-3 sentences describing what needs to happen for each chapter so that I don’t get sidetracked. Honestly, it’s become so useful!!
6. Which one of your characters are you most similar to?
I think I put a bit of myself into each of my female leads. It helps me get where they’re coming from. In my YA manuscript, my MC Lana has a lot of anxiety and self-esteem issues but she uses music and her friends to help her through it. When I first made her up in high school, I was going through similar things. In my quick draft, Ava has a few of my traits! We both love running, hate the cold and love the wilderness. The women in our family are doctors but though we’ve always felt interested in it, it’s not the direction we chose for ourselves.
7. Which of your characters do you wish you had never created?
This is difficult since all of my characters are basically my children. However, in my YA manuscript, my MC has a past lover (Eli) and someone she falls for in the present named Chase. Chase is much better for her in like every single way…but Eli is probably the most favorite character I’ve ever written. Unintentionally, he ends up dragging my MC down a pretty toxic path but from his mother eyes (a.k.a me,) he’s just misunderstood and I feel sorry for him. So because I ship Eli and my MC so hard, sometimes I wish I hadn’t written Chase xD
8. Do you let other people read your writing?
Yes!! I use to be really shy about it and I still am but taking workshops has sorta helped me get over the fear of sucking in front of strangers. Typically, the person I show all my drafts to are my boyfriend – he knows the beginning, middle and end of literally everything I’ve written and probably the maybes and what ifs too. He’s my favorite person to brainstorm with.
9. What’s the oddest thing you know about one of your characters?
So in my quick draft, I have my character Belle. She is super feminine, beautiful and charming. She’s also very good friends with her male counterpart Travis. They’re flirty publicly but never dated because Belle’s family wouldn’t approve. This is a girl who’s very confident and poised but sorta turns into a mushy puddle in front of Travis. So to get back at how he makes her feel, she spreads an embarrassing rumor about him when her friends start pressing about them. Except Travis finds out and he confronts her about it. There isn’t a shade of red in the world to describe Belle’s face in that scene xD
10. What is the very first story you remember writing/have record of?
So…the first thing I ever finished was an 8 page story called Risk Taker about a 12 year old girl who lived in a tree house in the woods and skipped school to scale buildings…because? I have no idea xD
. . .
Ahhh I loved this tag! I’ve done reading habits and tags before but it’s been so much fun to try these writing tags! Like Aris, I’ll tag anyone who writes and wants to participate! Feel free to use these questions or mix them up like I did 🙂
Do you enjoy writing? Out of all the characters you’ve created, who is your favorite? Let me know in the comments down below!! Look forward to reading your answers 🙂 Happy weekend! <3
